Type and function of the unit :Gene reserve forest; Biodiversity conservation (habitats AND/or species); Seed stand; Forest area managed for wood production AND/or multiple uses AND services
Monthly temperature (°C):
Total annual mean precipitation (mm):
Heat sum and/or length of the growing season (in days):

Year of collection of the field data entered:2021
Year of the most recent visit:2023
Remarks on specific soil characteristics:Lowland moor: diverse matrix of brown earth, podzol, rock, bog and peaty pockets
Remarks on other specific characteristics of the unit:20 ha open, diverse native woodland / wood pasture adjacent to recently cleared 70 ha Sitka plantation, managed by light cattle grazing as a complex of native woodland, bog and wood pasture. Oldest wild apples are probably 200 years old; young ones germinate each year.
All tree species growing in the unit:Sorbus aucuparia; Malus sylvestris; Corylus avellana; Populus tremula; Betula pubescens; Alnus glutinosa; Sambucus nigra; Crataegus monogyna; Quercus petraea; Fraxinus excelsior
Target species:Malus sylvestris
National population unit number if existing:
Year of establishment of the GCU for the species:2023
Year of the most recent visit:2021
Status of the target tree population regarding the EUFORGEN common action plans.:Included
Category of the population:In situ
Origin of the material:Autochtonous
Predominant silvicultural system:No silviculture
Level of management allowed to favour the target species:Minimum intervention allowed
Main reason for carrying out gene conservation for this species:To conserve rare or endangered tree species with populations consisting of a low number of remaining individuals
Total number of reproducing trees per unit:50 - 499
Sex ratio, if appropriate:
Status of long-term viable regeneration :Continuous
Distribution of the reproducing trees in the unit (multiple choice):Scattered
Estimated share of the total area within the unit in which the species is occurring (%):1
Remarks on the population:Cows eat apples in autumn, seed is spread through cowpats and deposited throughout free-range area. Seed from most remote and pure wild apple trees are given to local seed nurseries.
